Schools and qualifications

Children who must attend school with a non-German native language and a low level of German language competence attend classes according to their age and abilities in the appropriate type of school. Should this not be possible due to lack of German language ability, these pupils have educational support measures available to them for language development.

Special support measures for language support in the area of the Ministry of Culture are:

  • Preparation classes at general training schools in order to learn the German language in order to prepare for transition to a regular class.
  • Temporary additional language support tuition (preparatory courses) for pupils who attend a regular class at general educational establishments without a preparatory class
  • Pre-qualification year work/job with a focus on the acquisition of German language ability (VABO) at vocational schools.
  • Additional language support (support classes) for pupils who attend vocational regular classes.

The state of Baden-Württemberg also supports tuition in the native language, which the consulates are responsible for providing.

You can have school leaving certificates, study and exams, university degrees and professional qualifications which were obtained abroad assessed in Baden-Württemberg. The competent bodies will check whether your certificates or professional qualifications are comparable to a German qualification. In case of equivalent, your qualification will be recognised in Germany.
