Extending your passenger transport licence

You require a passenger transport licence to drive

  • Taxis,
  • Hire cars or cars in regular services or bundled on-demand services,
  • Hire cars or cars for commercial excursions and holiday destinations,
  • Ambulances if you are transporting passengers for a fee or on a commercial basis.

The licence is issued for the respective type of transport. An existing driving licence for passenger transport can be extended to include other types of transport.

The licence is valid for a maximum of five years. You can have it extended for a further five years at a time.

Prerequisite

  • Driving licence in cheque card format
  • Class B driving licence or equivalent for at least two years; for ambulances for at least one year
  • valid driving licence for passenger transport
  • Minimum age: 21 years, 19 years for ambulances
  • Proof of physical and mental aptitude

Procedure

The application can be made in writing or, if offered by the competent authority, as an online application. If you apply in writing, you can obtain the application form from the driving licence office. . You can also submit the written application including the necessary evidence and documents there.

You can provide proof by

  • a company or occupational health certificate or
  • an expert opinion from an officially recognised assessment centre for fitness to drive

If necessary, you must provide a medical-psychological report from an officially recognised assessment centre for driving aptitude to prove that you meet the special responsibility of transporting passengers.

Costs
